Get ready for an adventure that will leave you breathless! Michigan's Upper Peninsula hides a gem called the Chapel Loop at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. This 10.5-mile backcountry hike is a true masterpiece, offering some of the Midwest's most breathtaking views. Our very own senior photographer and hiking enthusiast, Joel Bissell, embarked on this epic journey solo to capture the essence of fall in one of Michigan's most picturesque spots.
Bissell's journey is a visual feast, showcasing everything from waterfalls and vibrant autumn colors to awe-inspiring cliffside vistas and the raw might of Lake Superior. His adventure began at the Chapel/Mosquito trailhead, leading him through serene forests, past the enchanting Mosquito Falls, and onto the shores of Lake Superior at Mosquito Beach, where the scenery truly takes your breath away.
The trail winds along 200-foot sandstone cliffs, a testament to the relentless forces of nature. Towering rock formations and vibrant cliff faces stretch as far as the eye can see. As you reach Lake Superior, the waves crash against the cliffs, creating a powerful display of nature's force.
After a few miles atop the sandstone cliff, hikers descend to Chapel Beach, home to one of the park's most iconic landmarks. Chapel Rock, a towering stone column, stands tall with a solitary 250-year-old pine tree atop, its roots stretching across an open divide to the sturdy land.
The final leg of the hike includes Chapel Falls, a 60-foot cascade surrounded by brilliant autumn foliage in early October. This moderately difficult hike typically takes 4.5 to 6 hours to complete, so be prepared for muddy, uneven terrain, narrow paths, and no cell service or water. Come equipped with a map, snacks, and sturdy boots!
Bissell's journey took him 6 hours, during which he hiked 11.5 miles, capturing hundreds of photos and videos along the way. For those planning an overnight stay, backcountry camping is available by permit at rustic sites near the lakeshore.
Remember, the National Park Service urges visitors to exercise caution, stay on marked trails, and maintain a safe distance from cliff edges. The sandstone along Pictured Rocks is constantly eroding, so be mindful of your surroundings. Parking is limited and often fills up by 9 a.m., especially during peak season.
Experience the full hike through Bissell's video, complete with the sound of crashing waves, stunning fall colors, and views that make this one of Michigan's most iconic outdoor adventures. Don't miss out on this bucket list hike!
