Directing Diane Keaton felt like an impossible dream. Could I, a mere mortal, truly guide this cinematic giant? Could I, in any way, shape her performance? Yet, despite my initial trepidation, as she stood before me, towering in her iconic Gucci platform boots, she never made me feel small. This was the woman who would shape my understanding of what it means to be a woman.
While many will remember her for her brilliance on screen, her infectious laughter, and her ability to brighten any room, I will remember her for the lessons she taught me about embracing one's true self. Diane didn't just exist; she sculpted her own reality. She knew herself, her needs, and how to thrive. This included having a second hotel room for her creative endeavors, such as designing her art books. She was a dedicated worker, rarely taking a day off. But here's where it gets controversial... She possessed an enviable self-assurance, never teetering on the edge of arrogance.

She wasn't interested in trends, and I doubt she ever intended to set them. The idea of conforming to appeal to anyone? Absurd!
I don't know if she ever considered the male gaze earlier in her life, but I can say with certainty that it wasn't a factor during the time I knew her. Her individuality and freedom were magnetic, both on and off-screen. She'd banter with anyone who could match her wit, often leaving young, handsome cameramen utterly smitten. She seemed oblivious to the effect she had, the power she wielded.
She truly lived in her own reality, untouched by the trivial concerns that plague the rest of us. This gave her a childlike innocence, a youthful zest for life. She approached every interaction with openness, whether with co-stars or interns. She wasn't fearless, but she faced her fears head-on, with determination. This was perfectly illustrated when, at 77, after some deliberation, she agreed to jump off a zip-line platform for the final shot of our film.
It strikes me now that, after a career filled with awards and box office hits, her final day on a film set was with me. We worked late into the night, past our scheduled time. She was exhausted after six weeks of shooting in the mountains of Asheville, North Carolina, doing her own stunts, including in river rapids, and a day-long food fight. Plus, she had been flying in and out of town for press. But she kept showing up, giving her all, take after take. She insisted on being addressed as Diane, not her character's name. No pretense, no intermediaries – she wanted to be spoken to directly, as herself. She was, and always will be, Diane.
